Separating Shape from Shading

Michael Bambino

These images dramatically illustrate the difference between shape and shaping - the difference between the underlying geometry of a 3D scene and its outward visual appearance.

The first image has been rendered using a variety of mapping and lighting techniques, for example, texture, transparency and displacement mapping. Despite its apparent sophistication, the scene is, infact, constructed from only a few primitive surfaces. The second image, rendered with mapping turned off, clearly illustrates the scenes geometric simplicity.

These images also powerfully illustrate the use of rendering techniques to convey visual interest without the need to undertake elaborate modeling.
